How can students jump-start their scientific career while still in high school? One sure and exciting way is to attend the Manitoba Science Academy (MSA). For six weeks in the summer, a group of high school students will get a head-start on their future by attending the Whiteshell Campus of the MSA in Pinawa, Manitoba. The MSA is a non-profit organization which gives students a chance to learn new skills and gain experience in current scientific research. For six weeks, these students will join research teams consisting of a professional scientist, a fellow student and a university-level tutor who mentors the students through each step of a research project.

The students who attend the MSA are between 15 and 18 years old, must have completed grade 10 and have an interest and aptitude for science. Student alumni credit the experience as a great preparation for university, as it not only gives them research, writing and presentation skills, but also helps them develop a focus for their future. They also make strong friendships with other high school students attending the program. The 2009 term begins on June 29th and concludes with a graduation ceremony on August 7th. The MSA students receive high school credits following successful completion of the program. Although these credits are issued through the Manitoba Department of Education, Citizenship and Youth, information on how the credits are earned is provided to out of Province and International students for consideration with their Provincial/State Education Departments to determine the transfer allocation.
